Summer doesn’t always feel like summer anymore, and it really does make me think: What do we do as adults to make us feel that burnt-on-the-cheeks feeling again? Some of us use blush designed for a tanning look or spend our summer Fridays off getting Aperol spritzes.

Yet summer doesn’t start or end on a specific date anymore, at least not for all of us. I have had to realize I am not going back to school and that opening my laptop means taking on more responsibilities.

This July, as in other months, I have enjoyed the little things in my writing and made changes to feel whole again. I have been enjoying using the font Georgia instead of my usual Times New Roman; maybe I am shedding the rubric I was influenced by over the years in school, and now I am trying to develop my own specific voice.

Maybe the rest of this piece will be written in this font. As I proceed through this month, I was flooded on my Instagram by the marketing for The Odyssey. I had people around me saying, “Don’t spoil,” because they haven’t read the book. Bro, it has been around for 3,000 years.

Greek mythology is so interesting because it gives people someone to identify with. Similarly to zodiac signs, you can call upon these characters in certain moments and see pieces of yourself in them. You can look at a character and think, “That is so me,” or see what they are going through and relate it back to something happening in your own life. I think there is something so interesting about these stories, which have been around for thousands of years, still giving people a way to understand themselves.

I think that is another thing I have been enjoying this month: finding things that make me feel like a kid again, while also realizing that I am very much an adult. Greek mythology has made me want to learn things just because I find them interesting, not because I have to write a paper about them or because someone is grading me.

I have also been reading Vogue Business, which has been another little thing I have enjoyed. I like reading about fashion, business, and the people behind things because it makes me think about where I want to go and what I want to create.

And then there is my new cheap camcorder. I have been filming random things with it, and I love how bad the quality is. I don’t want everything to look perfect anymore. I like when things look like they actually happened. Maybe that is the point of getting older: realizing that the little things don’t have to be perfect to be worth remembering.

Maybe summer doesn’t feel the same because I am not supposed to be experiencing it the same way anymore. I am not waiting for August to end just to go back to school. I am just living through August, working, writing, reading, filming, and trying to find little things that make life feel like summer again.
